CHALLENGES AND OPPORTUNITIES OF AUDIENCE DEVELOPMENT IN CONTEMPORARY DANCE IN LATVIA

The topic of the paper covers challenges and opportunities of audience development in contemporary dance in Latvia. The aim of the paper is to investigate and analyze the aspects that affect the development of the audience in the field of contemporary art, while gaining a deeper understanding of the prerequisites for the development of the contemporary dance audience in Latvia.
The theoretical part of the paper explores the concept of audience development and its specificities in contemporary art and contemporary dance. Successful practices from various organizations are described separately, along with the analysis of the prerequisites for audience development. For the empirical research data from interviews and focus groups in the context of contemporary dance in Latvia is used – the current situation is analyzed from the viewpoints of dance industry experts and the audience. Empirical data collection is based on qualitative methodology.
The main conclusions indicate that audience development should be a long-term, planned process that includes education, artistic collaboration, and effective communication with different audience groups. To effectively develop the audience of the contemporary dance industry, promoting diversity in repertoire and educational approaches is essential.
