Kopsavilkums

Taking into account the changing environment and challenges, the requirements for managers have also changed; one of the frequently highlighted prerequisites for a good manager is leadership qualities or abilities.

The aim of this article is to determine how leadership is manifested in the activities of cultural organizations and specifically in library activities.  It also aims to explore in what way and to what extent leadership characteristics describe formal managers of the National Library of Latvia (hereafter – NLL) whether subordinate employees are satisfied with their direct managers and perceive them as leaders. The article analyses various leadership theories and provides a characterization of leadership in cultural organizations and the library sector.

The article concludes that managers at the NLL possess both the characteristics qualities and skills and abilities of a leader and those NLL managers at various levels could be described as competent and knowledgeable in their field and in the structural unit in which they work, however, overall leadership at NLL could be encouraged.
